Samsung Introduces New Phone Storage Solution, an 8GB microSD Card

Samsung 8GB SD CardAs cell phones continue to add features like camcorders, 3G connectivity, media viewing, portable TV, users will increasingly become dissatisfied by their handsets’ battery life as well as their storage capacities. There may be very little the industry can do as far as battery capacity is concerned (we’ll have to wait for a major scientific breakthrough in that department), but as far as storage is concerned, Samsung has developed an 8GB microSD card that promises to boost memory capacity of regular cell phones by several fold without putting cellphone users to the poor house.

If you own a mid-range or high-end phone or a relatively recent low-end phone, your mobile will probably have a slot for microSD cards. MicroSDs are almost universal in portable devices, but maximum capacities still come short at 2GB maximum for media users. Samsung’s 8GB microSD cards will increase your storage capacity at least 4 times. These 8GB cards read and write at normal 16 MB/s and 6 MB/s speeds, much faster than SDHCs or high capacity SDs which write at 4MB/s.

Expect Samsung’s 8GB microSD storage to be in the mainstream market by 2010.
