Nokia Still Rules Shrinking Cellphone Market

cellphone market slows downFinnish manufacturing giant Nokia shipped 91 million handsets in the first quarter of this year doubling the number of shipped handsets of number two global seller Motorola. There was a total 256.4 million units shipped in the first three months of 2007 or a ten per cent growth from the same time in 2006 but declined 13.8 percent compared to the preceding quarter.

Motorola shipped 45..4 million units, Samsung coming in third with 34.8 million and Sony Ericsson is fourth shipping 21.8 million. LG rounds up the top five with 15.8 million shipped in Q1 2007. Among the hottest sellers for the top mobile manufacturer were N73, N70 and the E65 business phone.

Though it cam in as a far second, Motorola is poised to recover last years loses. Samsung continued its strong market growth taking advantage of Moto’s slump. Sony Ericsson fared better than everyone else in terms of growth, gaining 63.9%.
