Spotwave Z1900Cellphone boosters like the Spotwave Z1900 (image) gives mobile users the option to say good-bye to poor signals and dropped calls, but wireless providers may not be too enthusiastic about it as they can cause “interference.” Cingular goes so far as to claims that the FCC prohibits the use of cellphone boosters.

Also called repeaters, cellphone boosters have been knows to cause service disruptions for other users nearby, according to the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA).

So far, the FCC has not announced an official interpretation of the legality of the technology. John Davis of Wi-Ex, manufacturer of zBoost admits that oscillation (a signal interference similar to feedback) “is a valid concern.” Passive antennas that some products use, however, are not known to cause oscillation.
