Gupp Technologies, a startup based in Penang Malaysia, has come out with the rather smartly named “Phreedom.” Phreedom is a QWERTY smartphone with a Linux operating system.
Now listen, the Phreedom is a GSM/GPRS phone with Wi-Fi connectivity and has a VoWiFi (Voice Over WiFi) function based on SIP. The intention here is to be as cost-effective as possible especially for roaming users. Besides Wi-Fi and GSM networks, Phreedom connectivity includes WEP, WPA, and 802.11i (WPA2). A “dual triband” GSM radio at 850/1800/1900 MHz and 900/1800/1900 MHz has also been thrown into the mix for good measure.
Obviously a groundbreaking device and perhaps the closest to a true convergence handset when it comes to VoIP and cellular networks, Phreedom’s other specs are also quite breaks off from the pack.
- 2.5-inch QVGA display
- PXA270 processor clocked at 312MHz
- Combined 320MB flash and SDRAM
- Boots from NOR Flash
- 112 x 65 x 19mm at 130 g
The Phreedom will be available in Q2 2007 for an undisclosed price.
