Market research has bad news for watch makers. People are beginning to think that wearing watches are outdated. An article from AP points out that people today carry devices that already give them the time, which makes standalone watches redundant.
Piper Jaffray & Co an investment bank, have found out in a research that two-thirds of teenagers don’t wear a watch and only one in ten wear watches as part of their daily outfit. Experian Simmons Research tells the tale in monetary terms: Americans last year have spent $5.9 billion on standalone watches, or about 17 less than what they spent five years ago, even on an increasing population.
Watches have become much more a fashion necessity rather than a necessity for people who want to know the time. Some watch companies have begun producing time pieces with add ons like a GPS locators and heart rate monitors. Some expert have pointed out that when it comes to telling time devices like the BlackBerry go one step ahead in that they “manage time” not just tell it.
