Two incidents, one reported by the Scotsman and the other by the UK Sunday Times, really made me think about cameraphones in the hands of minors. Happy slap, as Wikipedia defines it, is a fad wherein a victim is attacked while an accomplice of the attacker records the incident using a cameraphone – not a regular camera but a camera phone.
The Scottish incident was a happy slapping done by a student to a 37-year-old headteacher. The British one involved sex between minors recorded by a 13-year-old in his mobile phone. Both trends are only part of separate trends that are growing rapidly in popularity.
Now my question is, are these acts involving minors a fad that just happens to be recorded by a camera phone or are they inspired by the ubiquity of the devices. When it comes to happy slapping, the definition precludes the presence of camera phones. What about sex among minors being recorded by camera phones owned by minors.
