Bravia Phone

Announced a few weeks ago in Japan, The Sony Ericsson W44s is one phone built with “hi-tech machismo” as its dominant concept. It’s main selling point is that it plays TV using a Bravia RealityMax technology. The screen is all of 3 inches with 240 x 432 resolution, which the mobile equivalent of high-def. The hinge mechanism though is impressive for both its innovation and its simplicity. The top and screen portion can open in two directions, side by side the control panel or on top like a regular clamshell. For better TV viewing the hinge also reveals a hidden camera inside which can be pulled out, the only drawback in the design.

The W44s is also equipped with a 3.2 MP camera, a 1Seg TV tuner with video recording, 115MB of internal storage and Memory Stick Pro Duo slot, and added to that is the full multimedia function, including contactless payment capability, which definitely makes the W44S a genuine vagrant’s necessity. It’s a little heavy at 146g but compare that to Nokia N92’s 191g. The only real problem with SE’s W44S is it’s not yet available in North America and obviously the difference in mobile TV standards poses a problem.
