It’s a Cingular, Citibank and Mastercard venture and several lucky cell phone users in New York will get to test drive Nokia’s near-field communication” (NFC) technology with a MasterCard PayPass payment function. They’ll of course be given a Nokia cell phone to use during the trial period.
Particpants can use the phone wherever PayPass works: these include 1,000 vending machines and NYC subway stations. Best of all, McDonald’s and AMC theaters have also started accepting PayPass.
Carrying a mobile phone has become almost as common as carrying a wallet,” says Scott McElroy, vice president of technology realization for Cingular Wireless. “This trial will continue to help us learn more about how NFC technologies work and how customers will want to use their phones as part of their real-world transaction process.”
Consulting firm Celent says there are already 13 million people are already using contactless payments like PayPass.
