Nokia 8800 Sirocco Diamond Edition: Why?

Nokia 8800 sirocco goldThe basic Nokia 8800 Sirocco – the one without the gold – will set you back at least $1k. The 8800 Sirocco Diamond Edition – the one in gold casing – is selling for $3450 in some places. The phone has a TFT-LCD screen, a 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth and music player and is most likely meant for calls only, by ladies in limos wearing Philip Somerville hats.

But it’s not the internal hardware but the external specs that will interest audiences (gawkers, paparazzi, etc.). The Diamond edition has a 24-carat gold casing and it’s rumored to be sprinkled with diamonds for good measure, though pictures of the handset does not show the shine of diamond anywhere.

The Diamond Edition is a limited edition with only 1,000 of these produced by Nokia, so who knows if this might not turn out to be a good investment… fifty years from now with expert refurbishing, only using genuine replacement parts of course, the handset originally priced at over $3k might be worth something in the area of a beach-front house in a world-class tourist spot.
