Handsets that can be modified through software are vulnerable to snoopware, the latest in spying softwares that allows another party to view your text messages and other information like call duration and destination. It can even remotely turn on the handset speaker. “What snoopware does is it infects the phone, and then you can listen in or activate the microphone feature of the device remotely,” says Paul Miller, managing director of mobile security at Symantec Corp.

Snoopware is becoming big business as some sites like FlexiSpy.com sell snoopware specifically for spousal spying. Handset viruses are a relatively new threat compared to PC viruses but many anti-virus companies are seeing long-term business on the anti-snoopware front. Just a few days ago a German firm claimed to have developed Trojan virus that allows someone to spy on a phone just by simply sending a text message. As long as the phone is on, the sender of the Trojan can read all text messages and listen to all conversation.
