A man accused of trying to steal food from a Kroger store in Louisville, Kentucky was pursued by police and shot by five officers when the chase ended.

Police from two separate departments are being questioned about the incident, which happened in late January. They claimed to have fired on the suspect because they thought he was trying to run down an officer with his vehicle.

The suspect’s father told reporters that his son was shot while his hands were in the air, and the vehicle was stuck in the mud.

The suspect, Trent Marion, was on the phone with his father in the moment he was shot.

Marion’s fiance (who wishes to remain anonymous) relayed this statement from Marion’s father:
“He said, ‘They got me; they got me, And then, just like six to seven shots went off and then he started crying. His eye was shot out, and he had been shot several times and then the phone just went dead.”

Marion was shot in both wrists, and the left eye. He is in stable condition at University Hospital in Louisville.

Official reports and news releases from the Corydon county police department conflict with statements made by Marion and his family.

Officers claimed that spike strips were used to stop the vehicle, which skidded into the median.
Police disagree with Marion’s father over what happened next.

“As the pursued vehicle went into the median shots were fired by officers and the vehicle stopped,” according to Corydon county police department news releases.
Marion then “attempted to drive away and officers fired several more shots,” state police spokesman Jerry Goodin said in the release.

Officials said the shooting began when Trent Marion drove toward a Harrison County officer who was on the side of the median. “He tried to run him down,” County Sherif Mike Deatrick said.

The incident is still under review by officials in both police departments involved.
