Cingular Hypes World’s “First Ever” 3.6Mbps Data Call… (By a wireless carrier)

The press release gives one the impression that Cingular completed the worlds first ever HSDPA call at 3.6 Mbps, which was actually reportedly done first in January by QUALCOMM on Nortel’s network… well, I guess Nortel isn’t a wireless carrier in the sense that they aren’t a service provider…

Soon they will release a statement about the first 3.6Mbps call completed by a customer, and then his grandmother…

HSDPA is great and all, but I think most Cingular customers would be happy to be able to use their phone consistently, everywhere, without dropping calls or having to stand near a window. Maybe they should work on that first?

Come on Cingular, quit trying to make people think that you are innovative or something. (You are not fooling anyone. Oh, and by the way, you are still rated worse than everyone else in customer service.)

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ — Cingular didn’t need any luck in Vegas today as it became the first wireless carrier in the world to complete a mobile data call using a 3.6Mbps (megabit per second) HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) device on its commercial 3G network.

Cingular showcased its Las Vegas HSDPA network by carrying the live call using a laptop computer equipped with an Option Wireless PC Modem Card and QUALCOMM’s MSM6280TM chipset. The company said it will showcase the potential of its network technology tonight at this year’s Digital Experience event at the Bellagio hotel.
