What is a Slingbox? I would assert that it was geek candy, except that it only works on Windows platforms. (Macintosh version is coming soon.) I’m sure someone has hacked it to run on Linux.
Moving on:
Slingbox is a nifty little device that takes the signal from your satellite, cable box or DVR and “slings” it to your desktop, laptop or Windows Mobile device… In your house, or anywhere in the world. (As long as you have an internet connection.)

Pros:
- No service fees or contracts
- Now works on your Windows Mobile Device
- Infinite possibility for slacking at work
- You don’t have to watch “The Bridges of Madison County” with everyone else in your hotel room. Just boot up your PC and watch whatever you want.
- Forgot to set your DVR? Set it from work, a local hotspot, or anywhere else you get an internet connection.
- Super easy installation. Your four-year-old could do it.
- Cable tuner allows you to watch a different program than what someone else is watching on the TV.
- Your PC or mobile device acts as a remote control for your DVR, cable or satellite box, and your TV.
- Chicks dig cool gadgets. Having a hard time getting a date? Slingbox may work better than a puppy at attracting women. (Ok, probably not, but you can hope, right?)
Cons:
- Only one computer can connect to Slingbox at a time
- Does not record video stream to your hard drive (I bet there is a way though…)
- Only works with Windows platforms (for now)
- Cable tuner allows you to get channels that don’t require premium subscription or de-scrambling
Slingbox is tiny, so you can actually stack them and connect multiple devices to one cable box. (One slingbox per device.)
If you have questions, the helpful Sling-geeks have a forum where you can ask questions and get quick answers.
How much does it cost?
$249.99 per slingbox, and you will also need an ethernet adapter near your TV (99.99).

Oh… and all the other features are cool too. I can imagine this being quite handy for someone who travels or is out of the house a lot.
