Palm 650 with Blackberry inerds

Wow! Two weeks ago Research in Motion (RIM) announced a deal with Cingular to offer the Nokia 9300 handset with Blackberry software. Now, RIM is expected to announce today that Palm Inc. will install the push e-mail software in the Treo 650 starting early next year.

Considering the legal troubles RIM has with NTP and its patent claims, this new business angle may be just what they need. Software licencing has excellent margins over the hardware end of the technology and these announcements may be the indications of RIM’s revised business strategy for the US.

As a side note, RIM has had the Blackberry Connect licencing program for two years, but customers have mostly been in Europe and Asia.

As for the integration with the Treo 650, you’ll have all the benefits of the Blackberry push-based email system while using Palm’s VersaMail email client on the Treo. This setup supports Microsoft Exchange and Domino. You’ll get wireless calendar synching, remote access of the corporate directory, and remote security access in the event of the Treo 650 being lost or stolen.

The name I’m hearing is the Blackberry Treo 650. Other more interesting names could have been the Black Treo 650 (for those who like danger), Treoberry 650 (for those who like berries), and my favorite, the Bleo 650 (for those of us who like silly names).
