The other day I wrote that Bell and Starbucks would hook up to provide Wi-Fi in 400 Starbucks locations Canada-wide. I also questioned why Starbucks wouldn’t provide access to Telus, Fido, Rogers, and non-cell phone users. Well, I was wrong. There is a Wi-Fi intercarrier agreement signed in March of 2004 that ensures that whoever your provider is, if there’s a Hopspot, you’ll be able to surf.
Bell Mobility, Microcell Solutions, Rogers AT&T and TELUS Mobility’s agreement provides for common branding among Wi-Fi hotspots in Canada. The agreement also facilitates Wi-Fi roaming and simplifies billing options for hotspot users throughout Canada. When you see the above logo at your favorite coffee shop or meeting space, you’ll be able to sign into a common login and billing will be seen on your monthly statement.
The four providers also agreed to build over 500 Hotspot enabled locations across Canana in 2005. I have to wonder if the 400 Starbucks locations count towards that 500 locations goal?
So my apologies for my mistake. My excuse is that I was on holidays when this agreement happened [wink].
[Thanks Branden]
