The release of iPhone firmware 3.0 basically saved the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S from further embarrassment by finally arming it with MMS capabilities and internet tethering which phones these days already come with right out of the box. Unfortunately, those early adaptors who bought the very first iPhone (EDGE only) are still stuck with an MMS-less iPhone regardless of which firmware they install on it.
Fortunately, MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team feels your pain and has come out with a solution to end your worries. Called Whiterat, this is a baseband hack which will get MMS working on the original iPhone that’s running on firmware 3.1.2. A bit of a warning though, this is a lot more technical than your average jailbreak, and there is a chance you might brick your iPhone in the process. With that being said, if you’ve got the testicular fortitude to go on with this, you can learn more about this hack by following the links on MuscleNerd’s tweet.
Meanwhile, for those of you on AT&T who want to enable tethering before its officially rolled out next year, MuscleNerd has also come out with a hack for this. Dubbed as two-bit, this is another baseband hack which isn’t recommended for the faint of heart. You can check it out here.
Again, we must reiterate that these iPhone hacks aren’t recommended for everyone. We’re reporting this so that you can be aware of the great efforts being made by the cracking crews to make the iPhone a better phone for everyone. Now, if you still decide to push through with this, don’t forget to hit us up in the comments section below as we’d certainly love to hear how it turns out for you.
