The Sony Xperia ZL is almost a great phone. Beautiful screen, attractive design, speedy performance, decent camera. Yet in all of those categories there are a few minor problems that collectively mar the overall experience. Any one of them is overlookable, but are they all? And then there’s the price. It’s not cheap.

Sony succeeded in making the thinnest and lightest 10” Android tablet waterproof, and added four virtual surround speakers to all the prerequisites for a modern flagship tablet like high-resolution display and a quad-core processor. We'd wish the processor was a bit faster, but that's about the only gripe we have with the Xperia Tablet Z, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a better Android tablet in the $500 range.

The Xperia SP suffers from some of the same failings as the Xperia Z but also benefits from many of the same strengths. The difference is that the failings are fewer, and, at the price, more forgivable. The strengths, again at the price, are more gratifying. The large screen, top-notch build quality, impressive battery life, powerful yet efficient chipset and LTE radio are all very welcome on a handset you can pick up for £300.

The Sony Xperia SP is available for roughly US $500 unlocked, which is a decent price for a device in this class. The SP isn’t currently ranged by any American carrier, but it should come for $100 to $150 on a two year contract. Now for the big question – is it worth it?

If you are a spec fiend, there isn’t anything on the Xperia SP to get you excited. You’ll be better off with an Xperia Z (if you prefer Sony), Galaxy S4, or HTC One.

However, if you are a budget-conscious customer that wants to get the most bang for the buck, the Sony Xperia SP is an excellent choice. It costs far less than current high-end devices, and it’s able to hold its own respectably.

The Xperia L is a well-rounded mid-ranger with lag-free performance in menus and nice looks. It does not have a hugely impressive screen nor a particularly great camera, though, and in the fiercely competitive Android market those are big flaws.

The Xperia L is facing direct competition from mass-market devices like the HTC One SV, but also from a myriad of quad-core MediaTek-based phones from China. The latter have a much better performance but lack the design flair.

All in all, this is a device for those willing to compromise. The price segment requires it. It would be a nice choice for the design conscious, but if you value specs and performance most there are more enticing options.

Since Sony took over the Ericsson side of the company they have been producing some great hardware,although their naming seems to be a little confusing to many, myself included.

The SP is a very nice mid-range phone with some great features taken from the Z. I was impressed with the Bravia Engine 2 screen technology and the Exmor RS lens. It also took some of the same design hints including that power button that sticks out a little.

The Xperia SP is by no means perfect. It's got a grime- and glare-loving screen that misses the mark despite its HD resolution. Other problems: a penchant for bloatware and other small flaws like the terrible WiFi reception. The design may be a little bland for those who aren't interested in the transparent element, but the build quality is solid. Also to its credit are the capable shooter, long battery life and internal hardware that delivers serious performance for the price point.

Even though it lags behind the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S 4 in pure performance numbers, there is no denying that the Xperia ZL is a solid Android option. Sony has done a great job of packing a giant display and decent hardware into a relatively compact form. Despite the use of cheaper body materials, the ZL still manages to feel great in your hand with the side-mounted power button falling neatly under your thumb.

The Sony Xperia ZL is undoubtedly Sony’s best offering to come to Canada to date. It’s their best hardware and best software for any phone I’ve used from their camp. However it’s going to have a tough time with the current competition because it’s essentially now running last years hardware. If you pair it up against the Optimus G, S3 and One X+ it definitely holds its own but against the S4, and One it looks, well, dated.

Again, this is not to say that it’s a bad phone, it’s a great phone. But when you put it up against the competition and even against it’s own co-flagship device, it doesn’t feel like to matches up well.

Should you run out and buy an Xperia ZL? In a word, no. There's nothing expressly wrong with it: I rather like the design, which feels modern, if a bit run-of-the-mill. It performs well, serves up plenty of battery life for average use cases, and even has a nice camera once you get used to its limitations (or aren't especially picky). But there are just too many great options out there, and while the Xperia ZL won't disappoint, your money will be better spent elsewhere.

-Supports Opera Mini.
-Great music quality.
-Bluetooth.
-M2 Memory Slot.
-Minimize/Hide your apps and leave them running.
-Hear your music while using an app.
-It has auto rotation sensor.
-Supports themes.
-It has FM radio.
-Quick download/send/receive
And other stuff.

Bad things about the Sony Ericsson W518a:

-Bad Call Quality.
-A little oversized.
-Takes some time to power-up.
-The memory slot is M2, so its not like others.

(My W518a has never froze, has never lagged, doesn't have bugs and it's really fast. So i don't believe in some reviews. (NO OFFENSE))

Easily one of the worse Sony Ericsson phone I have ever used.The battery is nowhere close to the estimates provided in the specs, even in standby mode .I have turned the phone practically into a paper weight by turning every power consuming feature like blue tooth,wi-fi etc.,and yet the battery life has never lasted me more than a day. Secondly and even worse is that the phone has an extremely slow processor and you have to wait for eternity after pressing any function. Thirdly the phone hangs up for no apparent reasons and you have to take out the battery and restart the phone, which is extremely irritating if you are trying to make a phone call in a hurry. In short, if you are shopping around for a phone I would suggest you look elsewhere like maybea Samsung or even the Iphone.

This is a near perfect phone: small, pocketable (unlike those 4"+ monsters), screen is amazing, connectivity is great, Android gingerbread, front/back cameras. The only downside is the portrait keyboard which is just ok and the speaker volume is not that great. However I would highly recommend it but not if you're 6'3" and have large hands!

I've had the play since the release date and to be honest I think it was a bad decision. Sure it has sweet games and can play my N64 game from when I was a kid. But I no longer play any games after the first month. I do like the message indicator on the power button, it allows me see if I received a message or incoming call without looking at the screen.

Some issues I have with the phone:
Its not made of gorilla glass!
I had an iPhone 3G for 3 years and it was the only thing I ever put in my front left pocket. I employed the same procedure with the Xperia play yet it has tones of micro scratches and make discolored lines on the screen because of them.

It locks up constantly. No matter the application, It can be messaging, music, web browsing, Facebook, placing/receiving calls

Even though I set it to never vibrate, it still always does. Even when I'm typing something. Feels very strange to vibrate as I type and the sound is irritating

Brightness; Don’t even bother trying to use this phone when the sun is out. When outside you can not see the screen unless you shade it under something no matter the brightness setting.

Signal; Apparently its a known issue a Sony tech tells me. There will be times when I get no signal for a day span no matter where I am in the city, no 3G no wifi nodda. Not to mention anyone that I talk to tells me I sound like I’m in a tin can, and that’s only if the call doesn’t drop

Lastly I cannot connect it to the Sony sync to update. No matter the computer I use it on as I have tried to load an update on 3 PCs and a Mac

In the end I believe I made a hastily decision on purchasing this phone, and now I’m stuck with it until I can upgrade in 30 months......
Hope my personal review will help any potential Xperia play buyers make and educated decision before purchasing this device.

i bought this phone less than a year ago com to find it is unfixable and sony ericsson will not replace or fix the problem with this phone is that the charging port prongs inside the phone bend and then no longer charges when i took it back i was told that it is unfixable that i would have to buy a new phone which pissed me off cause i paid $600 for it less than a year ago it is complete garbage and not worth the money spent or effort IT IS WORTH THE TRASH CAN and thats it !!!!!!!!!!!!!! ya my homies DONT BUY THIS PHONE IT IS NOTHING MORE THAN A RIP OFF GUYS

My first six months with this phone I experienced no problems at all. After that though, I have been experiencing more and more problems every week. At first it was just the screen blacking out, and I would take out the battery hoping that it would work.
In the past few weeks it has gotten progessively worse. The screen will pixilize the image and when flipped shut, it will litterally flip the image. Sometimes I have to take the battery out multiple times or leave it out for a few minutes.
I am very disappointed in this phone.

I have had my phone for 2 years, thank God my contract is expired! It has given me nothing but trouble since two weeks after I bought it. The phone has been replaced, the SIM card replaced who knows how many times and I keep having the same problems. It freezes, it drops calls, it shuts down, loses service in random places, often it does not get messages (voice or text) for hours after they are left, in general it's COMPLETELY UNRELIABLE!!!!! I am a substitute teacher, so I have to have a reliable phone. This one is nothing but a headache. It nearly made me leave AT&T after 15 years. I have had no problems with my provider or any cell phone I've owned until this hunk of junk. TRULY AWFUL!!!!!! I would give it a negative number rating if possible.

Dont even to touch,,,no way to get signal,,always : Emergency calls only,,always Searching but cant catch the signal,,,,,,if you dont want to hear when its ringing than this phone is for you
