Despite a few issues here and there, like the okay buy not great camera and the slightly dated chipset architecture, there is an awful lot to like about the Huawei Ascend Mate. Whether the simplified, somewhat unusual UI appeals to you is up in the air, but if you like the idea of a large screen on your phone, you could certainly do worse, especially if you don't mind 720p.

Huawei's Ascend W1 is a well-crafted device that'll impress anyone making their first tentative steps into the world of smartphones. If you're only motivated by price, aren't fussed about the limited storage options and won't be taking a lot of pictures, then this is an eminently sensible purchase. It's only when you consider the unit in a broader context that its flaws begin to show, and we do feel obligated to tell you if there's a better option available.

I tell you what the best bit about this device is… well… the best bits.. First, it’s a quality build. Second, it’s (just about) a phone. Sure, it seriously stomps all over the “phablet” line, but you can actually use it as a phone. Thirdly, it’s cheap.

When you’re at home this will replace your tablet. Believe me, at no time have I thought, “Hey, this website is getting on my nerves, I need a bigger screen”, because the Ascend Mate copes very easily with it. It’s fast, the battery life is pretty epic and the speaker works well, producing a very good sound.

The Huawei Ascend Mate tries hard to be a tablet and a phone at the same time, and for the most part, it manages to do so. It's certainly big enough to be usable as a tablet, and though it is slightly unwieldy to use as a phone due to its size, its light weight helps it stay manageable. It could be argued that the resolution of the device could be more suited to a smaller screen size, that Huawei could have increased the pixel density when it initially designed the phablet, but it ultimately doesn't really matter for the most part.

With big-screen handsets, the game is to replace your phone, tablet, laptop, camera and so on, with one converging device, but we'll leave to Mr Market to decide whether this can be done via a 6.1" smartphone successfully enough.

On the plus side, Huawei has equipped the Ascend Mate with the largest stock battery in a smartphone at 4050 mAh, so that you can keep watching movies on the plane for 10 hours straight. Not only that, but the phone is an all-around quality package for the sub-$500 price, with its stereo sound recording, great call quality, super-sensitive display and pentaband radio. The only gripe with the phone, if you love'em big screens, is the camera, as the lens seem unable to produce a well-focused image anywhere but in the center of the frame.

At this size, the Mate won't be for everyone. You're going to need to really want a massive handset and you're going to need to think about the practicalities of owning such a big phone. And on the downside, the screen resolution isn't that great but for the most part, it didn't trouble us. The only problem is, some things do look a little soft on the display, but this never gave us significant problems in real-world testing and we say it's nothing to worry about.

The Huawei Ascend G510 is a decent mid-range phone at a reasonable price tag. It runs on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) OS out of the box and has LED notification light. The chip and the UX is similar to the Y300. Wish it had a better design since this looks like a larger variant of the Y300. The camera is decent for photos in daylight, but it can record videos only at VGA resolution, which is disappointing. At a price tag of Rs. 10,990, if you need a mid-range Android device with good display, good audio quality, but can live with an average camera, go for it.

As a smartphone with the latest version of Android, a good-sized screen, and a decent camera (for stills, not video), the G510 is a good choice for anyone with reasonable expectations.

However, as time goes on you're likely to be tempted to try more than just the simple apps and games, and this is where you'll discover that the phone can't really keep up.

It might sound as if we don't like the G510. In fact, we think it's a capable enough phone, and that's reflected in its score. The problem for us is really just that we've seen it all in this price range. Each year, or even more frequently, there's a new low-cost handset from Huawei that fills a need, but it's nothing to get really excited about.

The Huawei Premia 4G may not offer the best in hardware or software, but what it does offer works well. The design is a bit plain and the materials are obviously from the bargain bin, but they fit the Premia's $99 price point. Beyond the design and feel, the hardware definitely functions as it should: the screen looks good, the signal performance is excellent, and the battery exceeded my expectations.

I just bought it today, new, and it has already decided it doesn't want to work. I have not dropped it, got it wet, ot anything. It did work for an hour. Now it is giving me pink screens or a black screen with a spinning green circle. I have been trying everything to fix it. Thing is, since it is new, I shouldn't have to waste my time fixing it. Do not buy this phone. It is nothing but a headache.

I bought this phone for my daughter as a Christmas present. Not even three months later the phone would not power on despite being on the charger for hours. Cricket said I could pay $10 for a "refurbished" phone but I wanted a new phone. I went back to the store and bought the same make and model. GUESS WHAT?? Not even ONE MONTH later the phone is completely DEAD AGAIN. I will NEVER buy this POS phone ever again. I am getting my money back and if you have one of these phones then GOD HELP YOU!!!!

I've had this phone for almost a month now and I love it.I was on virgin mobile with an i phone but dropped it and the screen broke.Decided to switch carriers and got this phone i honestly like this phone better than the i phone and also i get good battery life with it.Two days was the longest charge i got and that was with texting and making calls.This phone also has a very speedy processor a 1.5 dualcore snapdragon processor the same processor as the galaxy s 3.the camera has tons of features including panorama and burst. I love this phone:) and for 159 its a steal. I have a friend who has the lg motion and it sucks compared to this phone.anyway check it out.

I just got this cell 2 weeks ago, and already i had to go through 3 cell phones with this. Metro wont let me switch it with a different cell. The battery goes out so fast and when someone calls me I can hardly hear them!

This is the best phone you can get if you're looking for to satisfy basic necessities of a a phone that great. Quality for a low price. I couldn't ask for more, wouldn't trade it for a blackberry or an iphone. It's small, thin and very styish. I mean, of all the phones as time passes this kind "number key-screen" phone still looks stylish. With camera, video, radio, voice recorder, calculator, mp3 player, games, conference call, text message and all. Really simple and easy to use with, for those who don't want a huge smart phone. 2 years and 2 month. Still going strong. Dropped it a gazillion times, still going strong. VERY DURABLE! I've had this phone for a month now and I like it. I bought it for $99 and it's worth it. It's a basic 3G phone and has a nice processor. This phone has excellent battery life as long as you don't stay on the internet for too long, because that will drain the battery very fast. My only complaint is that the phone as little internal storage, so make sure you have at least a 8GB memory SD card. Overall it's a great phone and I would recommend it to anyone who wants just a basic smartphone.

The T-Mobile my-touch may have been discontinued, but Huawei never stopped making it, better yet, they upgraded this phone with more memory and Android ICS. New model number is U8681 and at first it looks like the T Mobile phone, but at a closer look, you can see the magic button gone and replaced with the regular search button. Android ICS makes a big difference in usability and battery life. Love the non slippery surface at the back and the dedicated camera button. Now the G312 has 1-Gb of ROM and 4-Gb of RAM at your disposal, plus a Micro SD card slot. All these new goodies make the G312 a highly competitive smart phone in the $250- range. Available at Wind Mobile Canada for a mere $249-

I just put the pros and cons up there because I realized that if people are looking for a quick overview, that's for them. Just keep in mind that I didn't put all the bad and good stuff about this phone up there.

I'm an experienced user, i've had this phone for a little over 9 months, and though it looks Blackberry knock-off worthy, it performs terribly.

I'll start with the design:

The design is okay. It definitely looks like a Blackberry, and I'm pretty sure that was Huawei's goal. If you're an avid texter, this is a good phone for you, it is very nice to text with. The problem is that the paint on the qwerty keyboard buttons will start to wear off, starting with your most frequently used buttons. The phone is fairly thin, though not the thinnest. It looks attractive, and the screen is about an inch and a half long and a little bit less than 2 inches long. Yes, it's an okay phone when it comes to design, but okay is all it is. I give the physical design a 7/10.

Next on to the interface:

The interface is okay to use, but not as comfortable as an android or a blackberry, or iPhone. What I don't like about it is that --well I can't explain it but i'll give you an example. Say you want to go to the stopwatch, so you go to tools, and then to stopwatch. Blackberries have that too, but at least if you use it enough they'll put it in the main menu. Even more annoying is when you want to change settings on the browser that comes with it. Say you want to zoom in, you have to go through all kinds of options just to get to like, 100%, then if its not satisfactory for you you have to change it and go through all those annoying menus again. If you're a music lover, the media player on this phone is definitely not for you. The sound quality is horrific, especially when its on loudspeaker because it crackles and at the highest volume the sound gets distorted. Sometimes the songs just randomly stop working, especially when you download them off iTunes.You can put it back in right away, but this makes the phone more likely to shut down. When this happens, you have to take out the battery for 5 seconds and put it back in. When the phone is doing something or an incoming message is coming, the music is interrupted. Also, the numbers appear beside the songs even when they don't do that on the memory card, so that really bugs me, it also says that the album and artist are unknown unless you got the music straight off the CD or off freegal. The images don't appear either. What I also hate is that the images to the CD's that you put on the phone appear in your photo album. You also have to refresh the phone after you put in the memory card, it doesn't refresh itself. The camera and video are an apology. The camera is fairly manageable in good light and when you're not moving around, but the pixel density is not high and appears extremely coarse when zoomed in. It also doesn' t have that many features. The video: The sound quality is pathetic, the image is pathetic. Everything is pathetic about the video. Not good at all. Voice recording is actually quite good, if you're mouth is close to the loudspeaker, which also acts as a microphone. If not, well, good luck trying to listen to it afterwards. The screen is a different story, the resolution is not cool. When you have foreign characters to the phone that appear onscreen, they appear as boxes. Not pretty. When someone messages you, it won't show up as one conversation. If someone mesages you twice, you'll see two things in your inbox and not one. The internet is pretty slow, not extremely slow, but i think around 10 seconds to load is a bit much, compared to today's other phones. The battery life is amazing when you overcharge the phone. The phone is hard to break, but shuts down all the time. Sound quality when phoning is horrible, the phone seems to have genius for picking up all ambient sound. I could say more about this phone, but I think I've said enough concerning it.

Conclusion: It does most things a blackberry does, but a blackberry does them much better than this phone. Don't buy this phone unless its for temporary use or something. Don't even buy it for your kid, its not worth it.
