Just because a smartphone is sold without a contract, that's no reason to swallow a raw deal. While the $249.99 Alcatel Authority sits squarely in the midrange of the Cricket Wireless product line, its slow performance, uninspiring camera, and ancient Android operating system are underwhelming to say the least.

My biggest gripes with the Alcatel Venture are its inconsistencies. It nails some of the most important features, whist failing badly at other table-stakes tasks. While I understand that the Venture is targeting cost-conscious customers, the display and keyboard -- the two most vital elements for interacting with the device -- are painfully bad. Conversely, the Venture is one of the better voice phones I've tested in recent memory, and I had no trouble surfing the web with the device. The system software is easy to use, and the Virgin iD packs provide a little bit of flexibility when it comes to managing themes and customization, but performance lags and the device is a bit buggy.

Wind Mobile has curated a fine line of low-cost Android devices, and the Alcatel One Touch 908 is a good example of that. With excellent build quality and a robust featureset, it’s an excellent alternative to buying a feature phone on another network. It’s a great gateway smartphone, too; for $120 it’s an effective way to dip your toes into Android without breaking the bank.

As a phone it performs ably– calls are clear and loud, and it’s relatively easy to respond to text messages and IMs quickly. Paired with one of Wind’s reasonably-priced data plans, it can be used as a WiFi hotspot and a turn-by-turn GPS navigation unit. It gets the job done in many other respects, and where it fails it can fall back on its low price.

The Alcatel OneTouch 990 does everything we'd expect a handset to do with such a low price tag. It's not the lightest or the prettiest phone out there, but for basic mobile phone duties in a handset that can take the odd bump, it's a solid choice, especially for buyers on a budget or parents looking for a first mobile for offspring.

The Alcatel Tribe is definitely a step in the right direction for Wind Mobile, in order to expand on their Android offerings and increase their attractiveness as a new service provider. This device is geared towards lower end users, looking for an easy to use smartphone, with all the basic features currently being offered (Android OS, touch screen, sleek/compact design, WiFi capability, cost effective etc.). If you like its design and want a cheap handset for making calls and sending texts, the Alcatel OT-808 will do the job. But if you're expecting a slick online experience, you'll be disappointed. For cash-strapped mobile surfers, we'd recommend the INQ Mini 3G instead -- it's cheaper and its 3G connectivity will make for speedier browsing.

It was the worst phone I ever bought. The battery dies fast. The screen always locking up and freezing. The phone is made of very cheap material, but so exspenive to purchase. Low quality camera and side panel keys. Speaker phone is very low can not enjoy music without headphone. I HATE THIS PHONE!!!!

i bought this phone as a cheap way to use our free line for work i do with an organization that i don't want people to contact me on my personal line.

it was the cheapest phone i could find. as far as i'm concerned, it's not even a good one for the price. the only thing i like about it is that i can save contacts for this phone to a sim card. however, finding contacts is going to be for the birds since they aren't put in any kind of order. to get a contact, one has to go through the list unless they are a part of the recent file. however, that is problematic as well--one has to go through the list until one gets to the number wanted. if the number is called 15 times there are 15 entries. i don't understand why the entry is not overwritten with the most current call but it's not.

supposedly, this phone has a speaker phone, but i can't ffind it--and i need it. i've read at the user guide and unless i'm blind, i can't find where it's located so i can use it.

the other thing i don't like about this phone is that lock feature is a joke--all one has to do is press the * key and the key that is under the word YES. i don't call that locked--except one can't use any other keys.

if this phone has a 14 day battery, i'm a monkey's uncle. i forgot the phone at work on a friday and when i came into work on monday the phone was dead. this phone has to be recharged everyday and usage means the battery dies even quicker.

Is so far the worst cell phone I ever had... I don't recommend it... It freezes up very often.
Also sometimes, it looks like it's working fine but does not receive calls or texts and need to turn it off and on, and all the texts start coming all together and double.....
Battery goes low very fast...
Have many issues with the screen...
Sound on speaker mode is terrible, and same to listen music, need to use earphones to have a good quality sound..

This phone just have voice and text. I purchased 3 mini-USB headsets and none of them work on this phone. I went to the Alcatel Website and you can not talk to anyone. Or get any information. Plus this phone is no longer on the Alcatel website.
You cannot receive picture messages. When you try to listen to FM radio. With a headset plugged-in you get a message: "Install headsets." The instructions do not have any information about the part number of the headsets or how to select to use them. With everything it says it has. It is only a voice and text phone.

It looks like a mini laptop that fits into the palm of your hand or a lady's compact.
I am from Trinidad, West Indies, purchased this phone through Digicel. Anywhere I go, I am asked, where I got it, it is so much "Lady" It should have been name "Lady Alcatel" (smile). The features are great and simply. If you are looking for a phone to fulfill a simple yet an important and busy lifestyle. This phone is it.
I have been trying to purchase another but is having alot of problems in doing so.

I made the jump to smart phones with the Tribe. Nice phone. Love the slide out keyboard! Only have two problems with this phone (well, three, but two of them are dependent upon each other):

1. It only runs Android 2.1 (so App2SD functionality is not supported) and it has very limited disk space. The limited disk space wouldn't be a problem if Android 2.2 or higher was available for this phone as you can stick a 32 GB microSD card in it.

2. The touch screen is resistive. This results in the touch screen often being unresponsive to finger taps or it being difficult to tap exactly where you want to. A way around this is to use a stylus, which makes using the touch screen a breeze. However, that can be inconvenient.

Overall though, this is a nice phone and I've been rather happy with it. Especially as an entry-level phone.

The phone is poor quality over all, the display part that slides upward is not attached properly/stable and shakes with a small nudge (other people i talked to had the same problem).

The Qwerty keyboard is too cramped, although the rubber buttons give it good texture. However the biggest problems come with using the touch screen.

If you launch the youtube application it turns sideways, so you either have to use the touchscreen keyboard (which is of poor quality) or type on the physical keyboard with the screen sideways.

The resistive screen makes browsing websites difficult, it either does not respond or responds too strongly and scrolls all the way up or down. Also lack of some kind of physical directional buttons makes navigation difficult, as once again, you have to rely on the poor quality resistive screen.

Also the battery dies VERY quickly, i have to charge it every single day, sometimes multiple times a day, even when not using internet or anything else demanding.

On the pro side, it is an android phone, the web browser is true HTML and the phone has a 3.5 mm jack.

Love this phone ive had it for 4days just made the step to smartphone. Its simple to use with lots of features and and it looks great. Very fast browsing and no real delay going from different programs in the phone. def recommend this phone, plus it looks pretty awesome.
