Great for those who don't use a cellphone often.
9/10
My dad is one of those people who don't like using a cellphone (mostly because he finds phones in general to be annoying), but we still need to keep in touch with him from time to time. Before finding speakout, the dealbreaker for the prepaid options was that most, if not all had a 30 day expiry date before the minutes would be reset. So finding that speakout had a 365 day airtime was a pleasant surprise.
Speakout runs on Rogers' 2G network, which means ALL GSM phones, as long as they work on Rogers or are unlocked and accept SIM cards will work, as well as having good signal reception in Toronto (which is probably the only good thing about Rogers). They also have the lowest talk/text pay as you go rate amongst the prepaid options, which makes the deal sweeter. However, there is a monthly $1.25 911 fee, which is the highest amongst the group.
Up until last year, getting a speakout sim was difficult, you had to go to a 7-11 store (which are far and few in between in Canada), and had to buy a phone outright, which were not cheap, and you had to buy airtime in-store. Since then, they've expanded considerably, since you can now buy a SIM outright for $10 instore or have a phone mailed to your door, and airtime can be bought from their website, so you only need to visit a 7-11 once (if not at all) now. With this in mind, I would not hesitate to recommend Speakout as a prepaid option.
