It's tough to argue with a phone that can be submerged in water and still make and receive phone calls.

Casio (in partnership with UTStarcom) has established itself as a fine manufacturer of extremely durable phones with its G’zOne line and the Boulder continues that tradition.

The Boulder is a logical choice for people with demanding professions that keep them in less than ideal environmental conditions. The G’zOne Boulder is military-certified to withstand the elements.

In addition to its rugged build, the Boulder runs at 3G speeds, has a 1.3MP camera, Push-to-Talk, an electronic compass and is wired for V cast Video, VZ Navigator and V Cast Music with Rhapsody. (The aforementioned are services offered through Verizon Wireless and are available for an additional monthly fee).

Regarding the Push-to-Talk (PTT) feature, it’s important to point out that this is a new and improved PTT and should not be confused with the previous PTT offered through Verizon Wireless. People looking at this phone will often be outside and should be aware that the PTT service is considerably better than its prior incarnation.

The Boulder rounds out its feature set with Bluetooth, voice dialing capability, speakerphone, alarm, calendar, video recorder and web access. Talk Time is rated at up to 207 minutes up to 212 hours of standby time.

With the Boulder you can browse the web, send/receive SMS and MMS, take pictures and record video, all without worrying that a strong breeze or a little rain will ruin your phone.

If you need a tough phone, Casio has a solution for you.

The Casio G'zOne Boulder is a decent looking handset that is designed for abuse. It's tough to argue with a phone that can be submerged in water and still make and receive phone calls. Support for Verizon's high-speed EV-DO network and a 1.3 megapixel camera with microSD card slot offer plenty of multimedia options, as well. The Boulder's ruggedized housing means that it can take a beating, as well. However, the menus are slightly confusing, and the poor speakerphone sound mean that I can only give the Casio G'zOne Boulder a 'Recommended' rating.

I'm not going to mince words. This phone is orange. Really orange. Like in the same obnoxious vein as the color options for a new Hummer. But if you can overlook this (as I eventually did), then you'll probably enjoy Casio's new G'zOne, dubbed the "Boulder." That's right - this angular, candy colored handset is the offspring of the Gadgetlab's crumpled Type-V, Type-S, and Type-SL review units.

The Boulder isn't another rugged rehash, though. In fact, Casio finally threw a curve by including some fairly useful multimedia features. Welcome additions like music playback, a more powerful (but still lacking) camera, and zippy EV-DO connectivity fatten up this phone's already rock solid resume.

Ohhhh, but the Boulder doesn't get a pass on these merits alone.

A beefy, rough-and-tumble cell phone

The G'zOne Boulder is a beefy, rough-and-tumble cell phone with a rich suite of multimedia features beneath its tough exterior, but we were ultimately disappointed with the call quality.

I lost this phone in a pasture while bailing hay. I found it the following year. For a year it sat in a pasture with rain, irrigation, snow, below freezing winter and triple digit summer. Put it on the charger (I had to buy a new charger, threw the original one away, thought the phone would be a write off) and the phone worked fine the next day. It's still working six years later. Might not be a smart phone ... but it is a tough ... reliable phone ...

I had a LG Chocolate touch screen phone, and switched because my contract was up, bad mistake. At first the phone was good, but then something went wrong with the speaker and who ever I talked to on the phone sounded staticky, and I gave it a week and it that problem disappeared. Not only that but it randomly shuts off, I can't use the bluetooth function because it doesn't work. And now it shut off and the battery won't charge up any more, it just says battery low when i plug it into the charger. WORST PHONE EVER!!! I wish I stuck with my last phone.

Please make this into a smart phone! When I got this phone over 2 1/2 years ago, I tried 2 kill it! I ran over it with my car, I dropped it in a glass of coke- called it, answered it, rinsed it off & it still worked. So I let my then teething son, chew on it, slobber on it & throw it around like a ball, still it lived! I talk on it when I am in the shower, taking a bath, or even swimming in the pool! The one thing that you must understand before you buy this phone is that it is NOT a frills phone!!! Yes it has a camera with video, bluetooth, VZ Navigator, V Cast music, micro SD slot, & can get on the web, but this is NOT like a smart phone! I think I have finally abused it enough that the buttons are starting to stick, the speaker function sounds very bad, & I broke the connection to charge it with the cable plug (thank God it cradle charges), not to mention I took it apart a few times, lost one of the screws & all the basic functions still work!! So AWESOME phone Casio!! Please make it in a smart phone that doesn't cost the earth!!

I got this phone when I got my contract renewed 2009. I was coming from an old LG VX8300 and it was REALLY banged up. It had even got a little wet once and still worked. So I definetely considered I needed something durable, and this is what I chose. The phone is water proof. I never tested that capability until today, when I decided I was going to get it wet based on I've seen YT videos showing people with their phones in water and other stuff like one guy had his in jello. The phone worked and even though my bottom cap for where the charger goes in it is off because it broke off, it did survive because i taped it. It was tested in throwing in bathtub and the rain test, which is just me in general going out in to the rain with it which I have done with it before. I am done with my contract on this phone, and sad to see that the Rock is discontinued. The phone is pretty beat up but does exactly what its supposed to do as a phone.

This phone absolutely fell apart in a year and a half. Many of the things that went wrong (such as the battery pack lock breaking) were known manufacturing defects, but since after a year it was no longer under warranty I was told that nothing could be done. It is at a year and nine months now and the battery is held on with tape and it is unchargeable because the entire charging port fell out. Same thing happened to my sister with the same phone. Hopefully the rock is better, but this phone is terrible!!!!!!!

Im on my 3rd Boulder. The phone is definitely waterproof, heat resistant and shock proof. However, on the last 3 i have had usually the first thing to go is the circular lock on the back that holds in the battery (a little electrical tape to hold the battery in and i can live with that). But, a little whiles later the charging port will literally just come out of the phone, usually still attached to the charger... and a phone that is unchargeable is pretty much useless.... So with a stronger battery lock and a sturdier charging port the phone would be perfect!
