antenna woes

2/10

well I picked up this phone and when I went to make calls on it the reception was horrid. I am in the AV industry and when I measured the reception agains my RIM Curve and Bold the Iphone was not even able to get a call in. So I go online to find out what is going on with the phone. Well there was a storm of confusion. Steve Jobs later goes on record saying that there is no problem its that we are holding it wrong which is what the foreign person from customer service advised me first. What !!!! I am holding the phone wrong??? Ok this didnt work out too good for Jobs so he advised that the software was incorrect and that the reception meter on the firmware was faulty and there was an upgrade. WHAT!! ??? The cure is to make a program mod on the reception meter such that it shows you are getting better reception than you really are!!!!??? Then I find out that the only reason that there is any further responses is that Consumer Reports cannot give a blessing on the phone due to the same issue I am having and that it is a design problem. Later btw I find out that there was an engineer from Apple that advised the top management at Apple that they would incur this problem due to the design of having the antenna on the outside of the phone. Note the people in customer service overseas keep giving me the same stupid responses that I see from Steve Jobs. Later I hear that they had intended to sell people a 30 dollar bumper to go over the antenna area. My sencore equipment verifies that the issue of the reception is no different with the new version of software. Look ... I need the interface to program for some customers that want the phone and or ipad for part of their integration package but there is much better ways of getting this done. Personally I would not recommend the phone due to the company response. Blatently Apple thinks you are an idiot. To further go on that other phones have the same issue is patently false as the antenna on the outside of the phone is unique to the iphone 4 product. In any event I cant use this as a phone and couldnt use the prior versions as a phone or for email either as it pales in comparison as being dependable. If you want an expensive toy other than for phone or email than go ahead but keep even a cheap motorola or other proven phone to use when you need to make calls. Note I always have to jailbreak the phone to get it to do what I need it to do. Since Apple is becoming more mainstream in the industry they are going to have some issues when they put out products that don't work well or as good as others. In my view they should have stayed a niche company with a fan base that are well... impressed with the esthetic of a product and not what it really does. The fan base is gullable and will buy products that are more expensive and really provide less. Hopefully Apple will change but with the arrogance of the Adobe fight with flash, and now this phone release and these feckless responses to a real problem, the arrogance is not going to go away. I have to rate the phone low because it is a phone first and foremost and when I hold it normally it just does not work. The recent response giving grips on other older phones is proof of a company that is completely oblivious of how to do damage control. This is a elementary design issue that was brought to the attention of apple early in the design and they forged ahead and deserve what they get.
