The Motorola Triumph comes along at a time when monthly plans are all the rage; however, this prepaid smartphone certainly provides an excellent choice to those who shy away from long commitments. A gorgeous 4.1-inch Gorilla Glass touchscreen dominates the phone's front along with the four usual capacitive Android function buttons. The rest of the phone is a simplistic in design with a 5-megapixel shooter at the back. The phone ships with a 2GB SanDisk microSD card but accepts memory cards up to 32GB. An HDMI output port is also included but you'll have to pony up extra cash as a cable isn't included in the box.
Coming to the software side of things, the Motorola Triumph runs a vanilla version of Android 2.2.2 that performs pretty well on the 1GHz Snapdragon processor. In day-to-day usage, the Triumph runs smoothly and the 1380 mAh battery is more than enough for normal use. The rear-facing camera can shoot HD video at 720p although it is usually quite grainy in low light; meanwhile, the front-facing camera is VGA.
The onboard Android OS includes a couple of different keyboard choices compared to a default installation. The TalkBack keyboard is geared towards the visually impaired and the TouchPal keyboard aims to provide better autocorrect functionality. The Triumph works on 3G networks in both the USA and Canada but while 3G speeds are nothing exceptional, they prove to be good enough for casual browsing on the go.
The Triumph smartphone may cost just $300 but its functionality, features, usability, quality, performance and style can easily be compared to the much more expensive iPhone 4, Galaxy S II and HTC Sensation.

Balancing out some of the negatives are the low cost of the device, the low cost of the monthly service, and the fact that you don't have to sign your life away in order to use this phone. The Triumph is truly a case of getting what you pay for.

In the end, we were left throughly impressed with the Motorola Triumph. The only features we found lacking were the lack of an extended battery accessory, and a poor performance by the front-facing camera. We really don’t see the front-facing camera as anything more than a novelty on this device,... More

The term "prepaid phone" conjures up visions of a poorly constructed device with even worse performance. Thankfully, the Motorola Triumph for Virgin Mobile defies the stereotype. For $299, you'll walk away with a mid-level Android phone that mostly satisfies, from its light weight and big screen to its... More
