Huawei Ascend / Reviews

The Ascend is quite a package. It brings a 3.5-inch HVGA touch screen, support, and 3G and Wi-Fi. Build quality is nice, and the handset is sleek and attractive. Yet there are a few gaps in the feature set that you'll have to overlook. Huawei has chosen a 2.5-millimeter headset jack instead of the standard 3.5-millimeter port, and Cricket has choked the home screen and app tray with over a dozen preloaded apps that aren't removable in the Settings application manager. Call quality in our tests left much to be desired on Cricket's roaming network. Despite these faults, the Ascend is easily Cricket's best phone in terms of hardware.

The Cricket Ascend is a decent smartphone, but when you figure in the low price of $130 at print time with no contract required, it’s even more impressive. It was a nice phone to use, and even though some features fell flat, the phone overall was a capable and (almost) full featured Android device.

The camera is lousy, and touch response on the screen can cause problems, especially while typing. But most features that Huawei skimped on, like a proximity sensor or multitouch, didn’t cause any real problems. Even better, some of the interface enhancements, like the nine panel homescreen grid or the improved theme in the settings menus, were actually a nice touch for any Android device, let alone the most affordable Android on the market.

Don’t expect too much out of the box. Messaging features and music playback are mostly stock Android, but that’s not bad, and the phone has the full power of the Android App Market behind it to fill in the gaps in instant messaging, social networking and so on.

No one will accuse the Ascend of being a Motorola Droid X competitor. But this is Cricket we're talking about; the point here is value, and there the Ascend delivers. The Ascend is superior to Cricket's version of the Sanyo Zio, which is $100 more, runs an outdated version of Android, and has a poorly calibrated plastic screen. The Ascend isn't the greatest phone in the world. But it gets you into the Android game at a low price, and that's all many customers will need.

So I've had this phone for a little over a month and I still think it's a great phone. This is my first smart phone and so it hasn't disappointed me. I love the google maps app. I'm new to the city I live in so it's a dream to have this with me for help
Plus I'm a big music geek and all the free music apps are awesome. The one thing that took some getting used to was the on screen keyboard, but since the phone has swype installed on it made it much easier. It does take a day or two to figure out how to use it. Only thing that sucks is you can't play flash games. One warning though, be aware that with cricket that after you have used 30 minutes on the phone you can't take it back.

I heard alot of bd things about cricket wireless.
I just switched from Boost Mobile and found that the Cricket wireless is a lot better.
The phone is awesome and affordable

The phone is probably great, if you know how to use all the features. : ) I'm having a very hard time finding a manual to learn how to use what should be basic features. So far, I can't figure out how to save a photo someone has sent me and I can't figure out how to set certain ringtones to certain contacts, etc., things like that which should be elementary...
