If your aim is to get a taste of Android on the cheap, then the Huawei Ascend Y100 might just be what the doctor ordered. Although it may be gearing up to play with the big boys in the Android smartphone market high-end, Huawei still likes to play it well in the low-end. The Ascend Y100 is a prime example of how you can still enjoy many of Android’s great mobile features without letting your wallet bleed too much money.
The Y100 can never be mistaken for a premium device. It comes with a rather small 2.8-inch QVGA screen, 3.2-megapixel camera, and a mostly plastic casing. It runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which is far from the latest version of the Android software, but offers a lot in terms of downloadable apps and third-party software support. It also uses a capacitive touchscreen for its display, which means you’ll have no trouble tapping with your fingers to navigate the menus or input the characters that you want.
While not much for multimedia, the Ascend can at least be classified as a reliable phone. With an 800MHz processor and 256MB of RAM, you will rarely experience UI hiccups or slowdowns while using it. Onboard support for HSDPA data means you won’t have to endure slow speeds when you want to browse the Internet. And the included 1050 mAh battery is good for up to 2 days of moderate to heavy usage, so you’ll be able to actually enjoy your time using the phone before you have to run to the nearest wall outlet or USB port to recharge.
The Huawei Ascend Y100 is certainly no Galaxy S III, but for just a relatively small sum of money, it can be the first and perhaps even the only Android smartphone that you will ever need.
