It’s a bit of a shame the Sensation XL has no card slot for memory expansion as this would really round off what is otherwise a great handset. The 16GB of internal capacity is a decent mid-range offering of space but we’d expect more for a phone at this price point.
On that note, although we were pleasantly surprised by this phone’s screen and performance we were a little disappointed with the camera and memory. Had HTC been more consistent at designing this as a truly premium phone it would easily be a contender for one of the best phones of the year alongside the likes of the Sensation XE and Samsung Galaxy S2. We appreciate the optimisation efforts which have gone into it and for gaming, music, media and apps it’s a hugely competent device.

Overall, we found the Sensation XL to be a solid offering by HTC. What can we say, we are a sucker for stylish white smartphones and the Sensation XL earned one brownie point from us in that department alone.

The rest come from the big, bright display and Beats audio system.

The only drawback is the absence of a memory slot to expand the internal storage. But, hey, if iPhone users can live with that limitation, we don't see why Sensation XL users can't do the same.

This smartphone is also a little on the pricey side with its RM2,099 price tag so you would have to dig deep into your pockets.

The HTC Sensation XL has some good points and also no so good points, the camera is fine for photos, but not so good for recording video, the display on the device is pretty good though and this is one of the devices plus points. Overall the HTC Sensation XL isn’t a bad Android smartphone, but considering its price there are definitely better Android smartphones out there for the same money.

There’s a lot that I like about the HTC Sensation XL. I’m a big fan of good audio so listening to music was a pleasure on it. I’m a big fan of large screens, so watching videos and browsing the internet, or even playing a game of Angry Birds or checking my Twitter (on the official Android app), it was all a joy to use thanks to the Android experience on the HTC Sensation XL and the size it offers. Day-to-day tasks will be a lot easier, if anything else.

Unfortunately though there are key elements that prevent this good phone, from being an exceptionally good phone. The specs list means this high-price-tag Android smartphone is already outdated by today’s standard of the platform, and is definitely not as future proof as other premium Android phones in it’s price range. The screen resolution and technology (S-LCD) means it’s not as visually rich an experience as it’s rivals like the Motorola RAZR and Samsung Galaxy S II, or even the Galaxy Nexus or Galaxy Note, all of which blow the Sensation XL out of the arena in terms of pure specs.

Then we have the missing microSD card slot, which might be the biggest drawback since that’s basically one of the main reasons people get an Android smartphone.

Dont get me wrong, Beats Audio is great and all, but as I mentioned in the Music section of this review, it’s the headphones that really make the difference here, and you could always just buy a better spec’ed smartphone and a separate pair of good headphones.

In the end, the HTC Sensation XL is a phone that I really wanted to like, but couldnt. Initially I thought the screen might be too larger but I got used to it quickly. But when you compare it to other smartphones in the same price range, the list of cons makes me feel like if I bought the XL today, I’d end up eyeing other smartphones in another month or two. And when you’re buying an Android smartphone, that’s not something you’d really want to feel like. Eeehh, not for 6 months atleast.

If you’re not a fan of super hardware intense mobile games, but like large screens, and want something that you can browse the internet, listen to music (in good quality) or just generally enjoy the simple things about Android, by all means go for the HTC Sensation XL. But if you’re a hardened Android fan, this isnt the phone for you.

It’s big, beautiful and the HTC Sensation XL sounds as good as it looks thanks to the Beats Audio enhancements. The limited storage for your tracks is disappointing but this is an undeniably cool phone.

The HTC Sensation XL puts in an honest performance as a smartphone, and is fast and easy to use. HTC's rich, well-developed Sense user interface provides a whole world of possibility for anybody keen on customising their phone. But the resolution on the display just isn't up to such a big screen, the camera is disappointing and you're stuck with 16 GB of memory. They all count against its billing as a multimedia smartphone.

The HTC Sensation XL has a mammoth screen, and it has the best of Android and HTC’s Sense UI, but in terms of display resolution, processing speed, video recording and memory expansion, its Beats-packing cousin the XE is the better handset.

The HTC Sensation XL is both good, yet disappointing. On one hand, it’s a great looking device, which does everything you want it to. The issue is with its price and what it offers for that price. HTC sells the Sensation XL in the market for around Rs.38,799 (MRP of Rs. 39,990).

The cheaper Sensation XE offers a smaller screen, but it’s denser - which means more workspace, it has a memory card slot, which means one can upgrade the storage capacity by a lot and it has a lot more power - a dual-core processor. You get all for roughly Rs.5,000 less. If you’re looking for a large screen device, we’d recommend the Samsung Note. If you’re looking for something smaller and affordable, the Sensation XE is an excellent buy.

I can’t honestly say I would buy or use this device as my own but I do like it. It’s solid, reliable, has a really good (not brilliant) screen and given what I put the phone through across the last week I’m genuinely impressed by the battery life it has displayed during this review. HTC have done a really good job with this phone, both on the hardware and the software side of the device. Physically the device is pleasing to the eye and despite being a little on the large side has a really nice, comfortable feel in your hand.

It’s one of those devices that’s on the cusp, not quite good enough for true enthusiasts who do their research to purchase, but a great phone none the less. Your tech savy users who aren’t into rooting, hacking and flashing their phones but want one that’s reliable and still fits well inside the Android Ecosystem will love this phone, just not the camera.

The best phone I've reviewed so far with great praise actually as it is by far the best android device that I personally have used so far and I would also say that I've enjoyed doing this review more than any other.

I am at the moment unsure as to what group of people this phone is aimed at due to its size and also its cost to buy, but what I would say to anyone on the lookout for a very impressive smartphone that has it all that you can't really go wrong with buying this phone. If I had the money then I would definitely be buying this as a second device for myself because I liked it that much!
