Don't use your phone when traveling. That way, you won't incur roaming charges. Instead, buy a cheap phone and a SIM card from a local carrier in the country your traveling to, so you only have to pay for local minutes or even long distance fees within that country which will still be more likely cheaper than roaming charges.
