Why can't I send smiley faces in text messages on the Motorola Moto G (2nd Gen)?

When sending a text message and adding a smily face the message goes but the face disappears?

Simply open your text message click on the 3dots in the top right hand corner, click settings and change system encoding to Automatic , you should now be sorted
