Is there a way to tell who initiates a hang up?

A friend of mine is in a custody battle over her four year old. Both parents agreed on getting their child a cell phone so that either parent could contact the child when the child was with the other parent. The father has been calling and as soon as his son answers the father will disconnect the call. We thought it very odd and did not really know what he was up to. Now, he trying to say in a court of law that the mother is the one who is hanging up the phone and therefore deliberately frustrating the contact. Is possible to someone tell who is actually initiating the hang up? She has looked at cell phone records but all it indicates is an incoming call and the length - which does not help her cause at all. A solution to this problem would be greatly appreciated!
