Is the audio from your callers just not loud enough or are you actually not hearing anything during phone calls?

If it's the former, try to see what pressing the volume up button repeatedly does while you're in the middle of a phone call. If it's the latter, try using a hands-free headset or at least the bundled headset with an in-line mic to see if you can hear your callers then.
